Device Compatibility – Does iRig Work on PC?

The iRig HD 2 allows you to connect to most devices, from smartphones and tablets to Mac and PC computers. The AmpliTube software is compatible with most operating systems, as well as having a dedicated Android and iOS app.

However, you are required to use AmpliTube, it is compatible with Garageband, Line 6 Pod Farm and any DAW. Any software that processes external audio will work perfectly with the iRig HD 2.

The iRig comes with all of the necessary cables and connectors for phones, tablets and any USB computer. It is powered by a USB connection, meaning that you don’t need to install drivers to use it, it just automatically powers itself once connected.

Setting Up the iRig

Unlike a lot of other digital guitar interfaces, the iRig is extremely quick and easy to set up.

It took me a couple of minutes to set it up when I first got it – it really is as simple as plugging in, loading your amp modelling software and playing.

iRig Outputs

The iRig HD 2 has a number of options for monitoring and connecting to external amplifiers.

It has a ⅛” headphone jack, allowing for quiet home recording or practise.

However, it also has a ¼” amp output. Between these two outputs you can connect to studio monitors, amplifiers, processing racks and all other manner of studio equipment.

Some guitarists even use it as a live rig, it can connect straight to front of house, or to a FRFR speaker, recreating the modelled tone exactly.

iRig & AmpliTube Sound Quality

The iRig itself is a very high quality digital guitar interface. The output signal was consistent and strong and picked up on the dynamics of my playing and the guitar very well for such an inexpensive unit.

While it may not perform as well as more expensive dedicated pre-amp units, it costs a fraction of the price and is more than good enough for home recording and even rehearsals or small performances.

The AmpliTube software, however, is the most important aspect of the package, as this allows you to use your phone or tablet as the amp modeller.

I’ve played no end of poor amp model and amp sims and I can safely say that AmpliTube does a very good job of recreating an authentic full rig sound.

The iRig package comes bundled with the free version of AmpliTube, which contains a good number of amp profiles, cabinets and effects units.

All of the profiles I tried sounded good. Mid-tier amp modellers often falter when it comes to hi gain metal sounds and clean tones. However, AmpliTube’s high gain sounds were full and punchy.

The cleans weren’t as impressive, but sounded more than good enough for home recording demos and for practise.

The original iRig revolutionised how guitar players could use their mobile devices, and with the iRig HD 2, IK Multimedia has proven that they’re still the best in class for portable, mobile guitar interfaces.

It is simple to set up, very reliable and as a digital guitar interface is as good as products many times the price.
